Boone Boyd learned a thing or two about odds at a very early age. In the hands of a gambling-addicted father, Boone and his best friend, Ronnie Birch, are left to develop lax morals and a unique view of what the adult world is all about.
As Boone graduates from looking for his missing mother in his father’s latest girlfriends to becoming fascinated with his best friend’s older sister, two thugs set their sights on making the boys’ lives miserable. Although their attitudes don’t serve them well at school, Boone and Ronnie put their heads together to gain what small victories they can over their tormentors.
The duo’s difficulties and choices follow them through their teenage years, twenties, and thirties, where the scars of their youths and the decisions they made in the past have come to shape their lives.
Boone delivers a hearty meal of psychological depth, twists and turns, and quirky wit, as two friends struggle forward despite having the odds stacked up against them.

This is a wonderful and original coming-of-age story with realistically gritty settings, raw language, and a hopeful if less-than-happy ending. It’s the story of Boone Boyd, shaped and scarred by a dysfunctional motherless family, overlooked and ignored by an indifferent school system, then cast out into a world that could care less about his problems, his needs and his dreams. But press on he does, with the constant companionship of his childhood pal, Ronnie. The book is an odyssey of sorts as the author masterfully navigates his protagonist through a series of episodes that will evoke anger, sadness, laughter and hope. Go along for the ride; you’ll be richly rewarded.

Boone A Novel Robert Philip Crane 9781517286026 Books Reviews
This novel blew my mind. It is rich, raw and gripping. There are passages so beautifully written that I was left short of breath. Agonizing. Funny. Unpredictable. The story centres on Boone who we first meet at the age of 7, and then follow into adulthood. That’s quite a bumpy road for Boone, mildly put. The only sign of a mother is his own existence. His father is a gamble addict. As the novel unfolds, the writer effortlessly shifts point of view between several charachters who all somehow, at some point, are connected to Boone. There is intensity, rhytm and loads of compassion. Twists and turns that keep you on the edge. A disturbing, rewarding, vivid and distinct read. Hands down a hidden gem of a novel.
Right from page two of the story my motherly instincts were awoken and my heart went out for this little guy, Boone. And as the story went on, his list of lacking just grew. He's deprived of everything a mother, a stable background, food, sleep, money, all imaginable securities. He is being bullied, misused and mistreated. Yet, he has a friend, Ronnie that seems to sticking with him forever. It's these two whose life we're following on the pages of this book. To not a particularly big surprise, such a pair of losers won't be able to turn out winners when they grow up. Or can they? The biggest achievement of this book is that it is able to tell more than the life story of a couple of unfortunate people. It deals with the heavy dilemma of whether one can only blame his life's events on being unfortunate, or must one step up and take responsibility for one's own life. Much recommended read!
